OLIVER WEERASINGHE • Konstnär & Skulptör

Oliver Weerasinghe är född 1933 i Colombo, Sri Lanka och studerade arkitektur vid Colombo Polytechnic University.

Han flyttade till London i slutet av 1950 talet för studier i skulptur vid den legendariska konstskolan Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Hans lärare där var en av popkonstens grundare Peter Blake och skulptören Sir Anthony Caro.

I London arbetade han med sina skulpturer och att porträttera kungligheter och celebriteter som; Lord Mountbatten, filosofen, författaren nobelpristagaren Lord Bertrand Russel, Drottning Louise av Sverige och många fler.

Författaren och filosofen Jean-Paul Sartre och författarna James Cameron, konstnären Francis Bacon, författaren och människorättsaktivisten James Baldwin, musikern Sammy Davis Jr. är några av de personer som Oliver arbetade med eller vilka ingick i hans vänkrets.

1962 flyttade Oliver till Sverige. Han hamnade efter en tid i Malmö, Limhamn där han hade sin ateljé och arbetade med sina skulpturer de följande 40 åren.

Under denna tid hann Oliver med att göra ett flertal porträtt av kända personer som t.ex. Wilhelm Moberg. Bronsbysten av Moberg står utanför Uvandrarnas Hus, Emigrantinstitutet i Växjö. Skådespelaren Max von Sydow, Sri Lankas President Ranasinghe Premadasa, artist Max Walter Svanberg vars bronsbyst finns i Malmö Hus/Museer samt många fler.

Oliver har gjort ett flertal offentliga skulpturer i brons. "Våryra" i Väckelsång, "Abbekåsagåsen Joakim" i Abbekås hamn, "Christina Nilsson" och "Fredsfågel" i Tingsryd, "Räven" i Rävemåla är några av dem. Han har ställt ut på gallerier och konstinstitutioner runt om i Sverige och internationellt och är representerad på konstsamlingar runt om i världen.

Oliver Weerasinghe är nu verksam och bosatt i Kvarnamåla i Småland där han har sin ateljé.

OLIVER WEERASINGHE • Artist & Sculptor

Oliver Weersinghe was born in 1933 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and studied architecture at Colombo Polytechnic University. He moved to London in the late 1950's to study sculpture at the legendary school of art Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. His teacher there was Pop Art founder Peter Blake and sculptor Sir Anthony Caro.

In London, he worked with his sculptures and portraying royalty and celebrities such as; Lord Mountbatten, philosopher/author and Nobel Prize laureate Lord Bertrand Russell, HMS Queen Louise of Sweden to name a few. The author Henry Miller, philosopher/author Jean-Paul Sartre, writer James Cameron, artist Francis Bacon, writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin and the musician Sammy Davis JR. can be mentioned among some fo the people Oliver either worked with or were part of his circle of friends.

1962 Oliver moved to Sweden and eventually, to Malmö, Limhamn, where he continued working on his sculptures in his studio for the next 40 years.

During these years Oliver made a number of portraits of famous people for example the bust of Wilhelm Moberg in bronze which can be seen outside Utvandrarnas Hus, Emigrant Institute in Växjö. Actor Max von Sydow, President of Sri Lanka Ranasinghe Premadasa and a bronze bust of artist Max Walter Svanberg located at Malmö Museum and many more.

Oliver has made several public sculptures in bronze around Sweden as; "Spring Whirl" in Väckelsång, "Abbekåsagåsen Joakim" in Abbekås, "Christina Nilsson" and "Peace Bird" in Tingsryd, "The Fox" in Rävemåla are some of them. He has also exhibitied his work in galleries and art institutions Sweden and internationally and is represented in art collections around the world.

Oliver Weerasinghe currently works and resides in Kvarnamåla in Småland, where he has his studio.
